Style Code: Your ultimate guide to building a summer capsule wardrobe
- Advertisement Feature
As the temperature rises, holidays start approaching and the wardrobe panic sets in, stylist and Style Code founder Helenlee Wilkinson is here to cut through the noise – and it starts with one simple truth: summer dressing doesn’t have to mean starting from scratch.
Whether you’re staring at a rail full of clothes and still feeling stuck, or you’re tempted by every linen set on your Instagram feed, Helenlee’s approach is refreshingly different. Rather than chasing seasonal trends or building a wardrobe around a generic checklist of “must-haves,” she starts with something far more personal – your STYLE CODE™.
We sat down with Helenlee to get her expert advice on building a summer capsule wardrobe that genuinely works, the pieces she’s personally lusting over this season, and why the most important step happens before you even open a single tab to shop.
WHERE TO BEGIN. SPOILER, IT’S NOT ABOUT THE PIECES
When someone comes to Helenlee wanting to build a summer capsule wardrobe from scratch, the conversation doesn’t start with clothes at all.
“I always start with a client’s STYLE CODE™ first,” she explains, “looking at their overall aesthetic, style personality, colouring, silhouettes and proportions that suit them best. Once we understand that foundation, we can adapt it across every season rather than reinventing their wardrobe every few months.”
Contrary to what the fashion industry might have us believe, she says colours don’t necessarily need to change with the seasons, if you’re dressing in harmony with your Colour Code, that is. What tends to evolve are the fabrics, textures, layering pieces, footwear and accessories. Summer might mean lighter linens, woven textures and more relaxed silhouettes, but the essence of your style? That stays the same.
“That’s why I don’t begin with a list of ‘must-have’ summer pieces, I begin with the person. When your wardrobe is built around your unique STYLE CODE™, every purchase becomes more intentional, every outfit works harder and getting dressed feels effortless all year round.”
THE SUMMER WARDROBE HEROES
So, what are the pieces that do the heavy lifting? Helenlee is quick to point out that there are no truly universal pieces. What works depends entirely on your individual style, shape and colour palette, but there are certain wardrobe heroes that earn their place in most summer wardrobes.
Her favourites? Linen wide-leg trousers, high-quality cotton tees, ribbed vests in your best neutrals, a linen blend blazer, signature sunglasses, a chic flat mule, ankle-grazing trousers or jeans, a raffia-textured bag and an easy throw-on midi dress that can be dressed up or down.
The reason these pieces work so well, she says, comes down to versatility. “A linen trouser can be worn with a simple vest and sandals during the day, then elevated with a blazer and jewellery for dinner. A midi dress can take you from the school run to a summer event with a simple change of accessories.”
The key, as always, is choosing versions that align with your Colour Code, Body Code and Style Personality. It’s not about owning the same pieces as everyone else – it’s about investing in pieces that genuinely work for your lifestyle.
THE ART OF MAKING PIECES WORK HARDER
A capsule wardrobe is only as good as the styling behind it. The great news? You probably don’t need to buy anything new. You just need to think differently about what you already own.
“It’s often the accessories, footwear and layering pieces that do the heavy lifting,” says Helenlee. “A great blazer, elevated jewellery, the right bag or a change of shoe can completely transform the feel of an outfit without needing an entirely new look.”
Her go-to example perfectly illustrates the point: take a pair of high-waisted wide-leg linen trousers worn with a simple tee or ribbed vest, styled with sunglasses, a raffia bag, flat mules and minimal jewellery, it’s effortlessly chic for daytime. But swap in a blazer draped over your shoulders, add statement earrings, a chain bag and a heeled sandal, and finish with a bold lipstick, and that exact same outfit is ready for rooftop cocktails or dinner with friends.
“The best capsule wardrobes aren’t built on having more clothes,” she says. “They’re built on knowing how to style the pieces you already own in multiple ways.”
SHOP THE LOOK
BEFORE YOU SHOP: THE SEASONAL WARDROBE EDIT
Before you even think about buying anything new, Helenlee always encourages her clients to shop their own wardrobe first.
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that people need more clothes when often they simply need more clarity,” she says. “A seasonal wardrobe edit helps you identify what’s working, what’s missing and what’s taking up valuable space.”
Her golden rule? If it doesn’t fit your body, your lifestyle or your STYLE CODE™, it’s probably time to let it go. And she encourages clients to be brutally honest about cost per wear: if something hasn’t been worn in the last 12 months, doesn’t make you feel confident and you can’t think of three ways to style it, it’s usually a sign it’s time to sell, donate or pass it on.
“A great wardrobe isn’t built by constantly adding more, it’s built by creating space, clarity and intention so the right pieces can shine.”

READY TO FIND YOUR STYLE CODE?
If summer has left you feeling uninspired by your wardrobe or overwhelmed by the thought of shopping, Helenlee’s approach is the antidote. Start with who you are, not what’s in the shops – and everything else becomes so much easier.
HELENLEE’S SUMMER LUST LIST
Of course, we had to ask: if Helenlee were curating her own summer wish list right now, what would make the cut? Here’s what she’s excited about this season…
Chanel Butterfly Sunglasses – £508 – Sunglass Hut
At the very top of the list. “A great pair of sunglasses can completely elevate even the simplest outfit,” says Helenlee, “and these have that perfect blend of glamour and timelessness.” She chose them not just for the brand but because the shape, scale and colour flatter her face shape and Style Code™.
Loewe Medium Raffia Basket Bag, £1,250, NET-A-PORTER
An obsession that’s been building for years. “It instantly adds a summer feel to any outfit, from linen tailoring to a simple holiday dress,” she says. “It’s the definition of effortless luxury and chic simplicity.” It’s the only bag she’d pack for a summer holiday.
The Weekend Co-ord, £130, WNU
“As someone who both loves and suits a pop of colour, the vibrant red feels fresh, confident and very chic for summer.” She’d wear the shirt open over a white ribbed vest with flat mules, a raffia bag and oversized sunglasses – and the beauty of a co-ord is that each piece works just as hard worn separately.
Farm Rio Statement Dress, £320, Fenwick
A summer staple for Helenlee. “Their statement dresses bring so much joy and personality to a wardrobe and are perfect for anyone wanting to embrace colour and print without sacrificing sophistication.” From summer weddings to city breaks, they’re pieces that instantly make you feel fabulous.
White Linen Tailored Suit, £180, Reiss
“A great summer suit is one of the hardest working pieces you can own,” she says, taking you from work meetings to events and dinners with nothing more than a change of accessories. Worn together or styled as separates, it earns its place every time.
Oran Sandals, £640, Hermès
A classic investment piece in Helenlee’s Style Code™ neutral black that never dates.
Hunza G Swimsuit | £195, hunzag.com
“Unbelievably comfortable while still looking stylish and luxurious.” A pop of her best blue that feels both current and timeless for holiday dressing.
