If you’ve ever dreamed of taking your little one to their very first ballet, this is the moment.
English National Ballet is bringing My First Ballet: Cinderella to Newcastle Theatre Royal for one weekend only on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May, and it’s been created especially for children aged three and above.
Easy for even the smallest ballet-goers to follow along
Designed as the perfect introduction to the world of ballet, this beautiful new production tells the story of nature-loving Cinderella, who lives on the edge of an enchanted forest where she once gardened and sang with her mother. After loss and silence settle over her home, she’s left with a sharp-tongued stepmother, two noisy stepsisters, and a house full of chores and shadows. But when a letter arrives inviting all to a Garden Ball, Cinderella’s journey to find her true self begins, guided by the spirit of her mother and the magic of the forest.
Choreographed by George Williamson and set to a shortened, recorded version of Prokofiev’s ravishing score, it’s a gorgeous reimagining of the classic fairy tale that feels fresh, enchanting and completely captivating from start to finish. A friendly narrator guides the young audience through the story, making it easy for even the smallest ballet-goers to follow along and get swept up in every moment.
A magical way to spend a weekend
What makes My First Ballet so special is how thoughtfully it’s been designed with young children in mind. The running time is perfectly paced for little attention spans, the storytelling is clear and engaging, and the whole experience is designed to spark wonder and imagination without ever feeling overwhelming. It’s the kind of show that makes children sit forward in their seats, eyes wide, completely lost in the magic.
With stunning costumes, an enchanted forest setting and a story built around kindness, courage and finding your voice, this is one of those experiences that stays with children long after the curtain falls. Whether your little one already loves to twirl around the living room or this is their very first time stepping inside a theatre, it’s a truly magical way to spend a Saturday or Sunday together.

There’s something incredibly special about watching your child experience live ballet for the first time, seeing their face light up as the dancers take the stage, hearing them gasp at the costumes, watching them completely lose themselves in the story and core memories are made. Plus, reviews say that the performance is just as enchanting for adults, too.
This is a one-weekend-only run at Newcastle Theatre Royal, so don’t leave it too late.
