Why getting dressed feels hard (and it’s not your body or your budget)

Many of us find that we “I have nothing to wear,” even when the wardrobe is full. It’s a feeling Helenlee Wilkinson, founder of Style Code, hears almost every day from her clients.
And she knows exactly why it happens.
“The issue is rarely a lack of clothes,” she says. “Most wardrobes are built over time through impulse buys, trends, or pieces that looked good in the moment but don’t necessarily work together.”
When your wardrobe isn’t aligned with your personal Style Code (your lifestyle, body shape, colours and style personality), it becomes a collection of random items rather than a cohesive system. Even a full wardrobe can feel useless when it isn’t functional.
We wanted to understand why so many of us struggle with getting dressed every day, so we caught up with Helenlee to hear her expert insight.
WHY DOES DRESSING FEEL HARDER THAN BEFORE
“Social media, online shopping, and fast fashion have changed everything,” Helenlee explains. “We’re constantly exposed to trends and style inspiration. While inspiration can be exciting, it often creates overwhelm and comparison.”
Many women start dressing according to what they think they should wear, not what genuinely works for them. That makes the daily decision of getting dressed far more complicated than it needs to be.
THE PROBLEM WITH TRENDS AND INFLUENCERS
“What we see online is often created for visual impact rather than real life,” Helenlee says. “Influencer outfits are styled for photos, not school runs, work, or busy schedules. Fast fashion encourages frequent buying without much thought.”
Over time, this leads to wardrobes full of trend-driven pieces that don’t actually reflect real life, making it harder to feel confident in your everyday look.
INSPIRATION VS COPYING
“Inspiration is healthy and creative,” she says. “It’s noticing elements you love – like a colour combination or silhouette and interpreting them in a way that suits your body, personality, and lifestyle.”
Copying someone else’s style rarely works because it ignores personal factors. True style happens when inspiration is filtered through your own Style Code.
WHY BUYING MORE CLOTHES ISN’T THE ANSWER
“When someone feels stuck, their instinct is to go shopping,” Helenlee explains. “But without understanding what truly works for you, buying more clothes usually just adds confusion.”
Instead of solving the problem, it creates a wardrobe with even more pieces that don’t fit together. What people actually need is clarity and that’s exactly why Helenlee created Style Code.
THE THREE PILLARS OF STYLE CODE
Style Code is built on three foundation pillars:
Colour Code identifies the shades that complement your skin, hair, and features. “Wearing the right colours lifts your appearance and creates a colour scheme for your entire wardrobe,” Helen-lee says.
Body Code helps you understand which silhouettes and proportions suit your body. “When clothing fits and balances your shape, it changes how everything looks and feels.”
Style Personality reflects how your clothing aligns with your identity, lifestyle, and how you want to show up in the world.
When these three elements come together, dressing becomes simpler, more authentic and far more enjoyable.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR STYLE
“It’s incredibly empowering,” Helenlee says. “Getting dressed suddenly becomes easy. Shopping becomes intentional, wardrobes feel cohesive, and confidence grows because your outer image finally aligns with who you are.”
THE FIRST STEP TO WARDROBE CONFIDENCE
“The first step is to pause before buying anything new and start understanding yourself,” Helenlee advises. Take stock of your lifestyle, the clothes that make you feel confident, and the patterns in what works and what doesn’t.
Once you have clarity around your colours, body shape and personal style, everything from shopping to outfit choices becomes far easier.
WHY STYLE CODE WORKS
“Style Code gives women clarity,” she says. “Instead of chasing trends or copying others, it helps you understand the unique combination of colour, shape, and style that works specifically for you. From there, you can build a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are, supports your daily life, and lets go of what no longer serves you. Confidence grows, and style becomes effortless.”

MEET OUR EXPERT IN RESIDENCE HELENLEE
Helenlee Wilkinson created Style Code to fill a gap in the industry. Ten years ago, she faced her own style and identity crisis while working as a personal trainer. Shopping had become an emotional fix rather than a form of self-expression.
Sharing her journey online as The Green Queen, Helenlee became known for her love of emerald green, symbolising healing, creativity, and renewal – a colour that would later shape her brand. Style Code combines personal style, body confidence, colour analysis, hair and makeup guidance, mindful shopping, and capsule wardrobes, helping women feel confident and authentic in their everyday lives.
“From the outset, it feels less like a styling session and more like a supportive, eye-opening conversation,” she says.
