For many businesses, Christmas is the most important trading period of the year.

And in the North East, few opportunities capture the festive spending season quite like trading at Newcastle’s hugely popular Christmas Market.

This year, Christmas planning has officially begun early. Applications are now open for traders to secure a spot at Newcastle’s Christmas Market 2026, giving regional businesses the chance to be part of one of the North East’s most-loved festive events before spaces fill up.

Organised by NE1 and Newcastle City Council, the market has grown into a major seasonal destination, drawing visitors from across the UK. Last year alone saw more than 2.2 million visits, making it one of the busiest festive events in the region.

For traders, that footfall represents a huge opportunity.

A MARKET WITH A STRONG INDEPENDENT FOCUS – OVER 84% BEING LOCAL

One of the things that sets Newcastle’s Christmas Market apart from many others across the country is its commitment to local businesses. In 2025, over 84% of traders came from within 20 miles of Newcastle, helping create a market that truly reflects the creativity and character of the North East.

From artisan makers and independent retailers to bakers, crafters and street food favourites, the market aims to showcase the very best the region has to offer.

For shoppers, that means discovering unique gifts, handmade goods and locally produced treats. For traders, it means joining a curated marketplace that celebrates quality, originality and regional talent.

A FESTIVE CITY CENTRE EXPERIENCE

Each winter, the heart of the city transforms into a festive hub. The market stretches across some of Newcastle’s most iconic streets, including Grey’s Monument, Grainger Street and Grey Street, as well as Old Eldon Square.

For 2025, the market expanded even further with the addition of Nelson Street, introducing nine new chalets and creating even more opportunities for businesses to take part.

The new location also sits directly adjacent to the historic Grainger Market, encouraging visitors to explore both markets and extending the festive shopping experience across the city centre.

In total, more than 60 stalls will bring seasonal magic to Newcastle this winter.

FLEXIBILITY FOR SMALLER TRADERS

Last year’s market welcomed 2.2 million visits – proof that Newcastle has firmly earned its place as a go-to Christmas destination.

For traders, that’s a huge, ready-made audience already in the mood to shop, eat and soak up the festive atmosphere. But what really sets Newcastle’s Christmas Market apart is the flexibility. Instead of committing to the full five weeks, chalets can be booked on a weekly basis.

It’s a game-changer for smaller and independent businesses, giving you the chance to test the waters, manage costs and still be part of something big, without the pressure of a long-term commitment.

A MARKET THAT CELEBRATES ITS TRADERS

Newcastle City Council and NE1 place a strong emphasis on supporting and celebrating the businesses behind the stalls, so much so that traders were recognised at a dedicated awards evening last year.

Last year also introduced a sustainability pilot, highlighting businesses committed to reducing waste and operating more responsibly.

It’s this focus on community, quality and innovation that continues to drive the market’s success.
