Looking for a new spot for brunch in Newcastle?

We’ve found a cosy hidden gem in Gosforth that we almost don’t want to share (but it’s too good to gatekeep).

The Gosforth Civic Theatre Café Bar is one of those spaces that makes you instantly feel relaxed as you walk through the door. Whether you’re there for a working morning with coffee in hand, a long overdue brunch with friends or just to watch the world go by through those huge windows.

THE VIBE: SCANDI CHARM AND AUTUMN COSINESS

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a quirky, hexagonal layout that somehow feels both intimate and open. Think contemporary Scandi minimalism and warm, wooden charm with gorgeous hanging ceiling lights and greenery, natural textures and sunlight streaming through big, airy windows that make even a drizzly autumn day feel golden.

It’s the kind of place that welcomes everyone: freelancers with laptops, parents with prams, friends on catch-up dates and dog walkers grabbing a flat white on route home. Expect feel-good vibes, a heart-warming hum of conversation in the background and every detail is perfected — from the friendly service to the comforting scent of fresh coffee and toasted sourdough.

BRUNCH IN NEWCASTLE GOALS

If you’re love brunch (and let’s face it, doesn’t?), this café is about to become your new go-to.

Their daytime menu, served Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30am – 4pm, is full of fresh, seasonal goodness. Expect everything from smashed avocado on sourdough to creamy mushrooms on toast, hearty veggie breakfasts (even build your own breakfasts) and indulgent French toast with maple syrup and bacon.

For lunch, their deli counter is a must. You’ll find vibrant, flavour-packed salads like spiced carrot and roast chickpea, chilli and garlic charred broccoli or a classic caprese with herb dressing. If you’re craving comfort, go for a jacket potato loaded with your favourite fillings, or one of their delicious, toasted sandwiches — the caramelised onion, mushroom and feta toastie is our personal favourite.

Everything is freshly made, beautifully presented and caters for all – with plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

COFFEE, CAKE AND COMMUNITY

No café trip is complete without coffee and something sweet and GCT Café Bar has got you covered. Their coffee is smooth and rich (the cappuccinos are *chef’s kiss*), and the cake counter is always stacked with tempting homemade bakes and sweet treats.

It’s also a space that feels genuinely inclusive. The venue is accessible, dog-friendly (with a dog-free area if you prefer), and there are baby change facilities in every bathroom. Free Wi-Fi and a relaxed atmosphere make it just as ideal for working remotely as it is for weekend brunching.

SERVING MORE THAN JUST FOOD AND COFFEE

The best part? The Café Bar is part of the Gosforth Civic Theatre, so there’s always something happening.

Every first Thursday of the month, you can catch Live at GCT Café  – an evening of food, drinks and live acoustic music from incredible local artists. It’s free entry, the vibe is chilled and it’s the perfect excuse to make a night of it.

Don’t miss the next gig on Thursday 6th November, where talented local artist Steff Mundi will be taking to the stage. No tickets are required, just pop in or call ahead if you would like to reserve a table or pre-order food.
