When it comes to wedding venues in County Durham, The Byirs is unlike anywhere else.
Exclusive, secluded and surrounded by water, couples have described it as feeling like stepping into your own private island for the day.
By choosing this stunning new waterside family-run wedding venue, you have full exclusivity of the grounds, the buildings and the breathtaking views of the Derwent Reservoir.
With only two weddings hosted each week, the Byirs team can give you their complete focus.
There’s no production line feel here – just warm, personal service that ensures every moment from their family to yours that makes your wedding feel relaxed, heartfelt and utterly unforgettable.
AN EXCLUSIVE WEDDING VENUE WITH A RUSTIC SOUL
The Byirs is a collection of stone and wooden buildings nestled into the South shore of the Derwent Reservoir. Its centrepiece is a 16th-century barn, recently renovated into a rustic yet modern ceremony space full of character and charm.
Owned by the Irwin family since 2014, the venue reflects their vision of creating something truly special. It’s not a working farm anymore, but it carries the soul of history, with every detail curated to balance timeless beauty with contemporary elegance. The result? A wedding venue that feels authentic, atmospheric and uniquely yours.
ESCAPE THE CITY LIFE HUSTLE, EMBRACE THE CALM COUNTRYSIDE
The magic of The Byirs lies in its setting. Rural, tranquil and ringed by water, it’s a true retreat from everyday life. Guests escape to a world where the only sounds are birdsong, fluttering sails across the reservoir and the laughter of loved ones gathering to celebrate.
The venue’s private paddock, along with a beautiful pagoda, offers you the choice of indoor or outdoor ceremonies – each with panoramic views over the crystal sparkling waters. Whether it’s an intimate ceremony of 20 or a celebration of 100, every moment is framed by serene natural beauty and is tailored to you.
SPACES DESIGNED FOR JOY AND TOGETHERNESS
The Byirs offers a series of versatile spaces designed to carry you and your guests seamlessly through the day. From the Wilkinson Suite, where guests can gather with drinks and canapés, to the Derwent Dressing Suite, a serene and elegant preparation space perfect for morning excitement, every room feels carefully considered.
One of our favourite spaces is the Island Room – a reception space where rustic charm meets modern design. With floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the reservoir, it’s a place where sunset light glows, nature becomes your backdrop and celebrations feel romantic.
STAY CLOSE, CELEBRATE LONGER
If you want to extend your celebration, The Byirs offers inviting rural accommodation just a short stroll from the main venue. Seven beautiful wooden rooms – sleeping up to 21 guests – were lovingly built by the Irwin family in 2015.
And even better news – the brand-new honeymoon suite is now open. Just a short stroll from the heart of the venue, this serene retreat offers you a modern sanctuary designed for complete tranquillity. Think timeless interiors, calming luxury and a private escape surrounded by nothing but nature’s gentle sounds. The perfect way to end your wedding day in style.
A DINING EXPERIENCE TAILORED TO YOU
A wedding feast should be every bit as memorable as the setting – and The Byirs takes pride in delivering exactly that. Their in-house catering team creates menus that accommodate every palate and preference. From elegant plated mains to rustic sharing boards, grazing tables and indulgent desserts, the food here is crafted to bring people together.
The focus is on creating a dining experience that feels personal, celebratory and deeply satisfying – so guests leave not just satisfied but truly cared for.
FAMILY-RUN WARMTH MEETS GRAND EXCLUSIVITY
At its heart, The Byirs is a family story. The Irwin family not only own the venue but they remain deeply involved in every wedding they host. This personal touch is what makes the experience so unique – brides, grooms and guests alike are welcomed with genuine warmth, yet the setting retains a sense of grandeur that makes the day feel momentous.
For couples searching for wedding venues in County Durham, The Byirs offers something rare: total exclusivity in a setting that feels like it could be anywhere in the world.
