The holistic healing power of lymphatic drainage massage, from an expert

Lymphatic drainage massage is having a serious moment right now — and at Wellness Therapies, founder and North East therapist Donna Reddy is here to reveal why it’s so much more than just a beauty trend.
We’ve seen it all – jawlines looking sharper, bloating disappearing overnight and claims it’s the ultimate detox. But behind the hype, Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, science-backed therapy that works far deeper than the surface.
By guiding your body’s natural “housekeeping system,” MLD clears waste, reduces puffiness, boosts immunity and leaves you feeling lighter, brighter and more energised. The results? Yes, you might notice a slimmer silhouette – but you’ll also sleep better, recover faster and feel more in tune with your body.
From post-surgery healing to easing perimenopausal symptoms, Wellness Therapies’ holistic approach will transform your lifestyle…
SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?
Think of it as your body’s invisible housekeeping service. This vast network of vessels and nodes clears away cellular waste, excess fluid and toxins while also playing a vital role in immunity. When it flows freely, your skin looks brighter, your body feels lighter and your energy levels soar.
The catch? Unlike your heart, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It relies on movement, breath and healthy habits to keep things circulating. If it slows down, you can feel puffy, tired, sluggish or even more prone to picking up every cold that’s going around.
That’s where Manual Lymphatic Drainage at Wellness Therapies comes in…
MORE THAN JUST A MASSAGE
Forget deep tissue kneading or sports-style pressure. Lymphatic drainage is completely different. With its gentle, sweeping motions, it follows the natural pathways of the lymph, helping fluid move more efficiently through the body.
“It’s not about pressure, it’s about precision. These small, light movements can have a huge impact – easing swelling, calming inflammation, supporting recovery, and giving people that amazing ‘lighter’ feeling.”
Donna explains.
And yes, the visible changes are real. “Clients often notice they look slimmer or more sculpted straight after a session,” Donna says, “but the biggest win is how they feel — clearer, calmer, more energised.”
WHY WELLNESS THERAPIES APPROACH IS DIFFERENT
Donna’s background sets her apart. She trained in Sports Massage Therapy, is a Licensed Trauma Therapist, and is an accredited Pre- and Post-Operative MLD Practitioner. That means she can support everyone from women navigating hormonal changes to people recovering after surgery, to anyone simply wanting to feel more connected to their body again.
Based in the heart of Ponteland, Donna knows that no two clients are the same. “I don’t follow a set routine – every session is personalised. One person might need to focus on abdominal flow, another on post-surgical healing, another on stress relief. It’s always a partnership.”
PERIMENOPAUSE AND LYMPHATIC HEALTH
Donna is especially passionate about supporting women in perimenopause. Hormones have a powerful effect on the lymphatic system, so when oestrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate, symptoms like bloating, puffiness and fluid retention often appear.
“I see so many women in this stage of life who feel frustrated that their bodies suddenly feel heavier or slower,” Donna says. “MLD can really help – not only by easing fluid build-up but also by offering an hour of calm, which is just as valuable when you’re juggling so much.”
Donna understands this on a personal level, too. Having dealt with premature ovarian insufficiency in her twenties, she’s experienced many of the challenges of menopause herself. “I can completely empathise – but my focus is always on solutions, balance and helping women feel more like themselves again.”
STRESS, BURNOUT AND THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Of course, you don’t have to be in perimenopause or recovering from surgery to benefit. So many of us are running on empty, stuck in “fight or flight” mode. Stress doesn’t just affect your mind; it disrupts the lymphatic system too, making it harder for your body to clear waste and recover properly.
The good news? The slow, rhythmic movements of MLD switch on your body’s parasympathetic response — the “rest and repair” mode. Clients often describe the experience as blissful, and many leave their first session with better sleep, less puffiness, and a calm, clear head.
One Wellness Therapies’ client said: “The swelling had gone right down, my legs felt lighter and I had a better understanding of how to keep my lymphatic system healthy. It’s not just about looking better – it’s about feeling in control of my body again.”
QUICK FIXES VS LASTING RESULTS
Did you know that one MLD session can actually make a difference? But the real transformation comes with consistency.
That’s why Donna created her ‘Feel Like You Again’ Lymphatic Programme – eight sessions over six weeks, designed to retrain the lymphatic system and give you lasting results.
“It’s like going to the gym,” she explains. “One workout feels great, but regular sessions build strength and resilience. The same goes for your lymph health.”
BEAUTY IN BALANCE
At the heart of Donna’s work is a belief that wellbeing isn’t about deprivation, punishment, or chasing unrealistic ideals. “I don’t judge or dictate my clients’ lifestyle choices,” she says. “I meet them exactly where they are. My role is to offer solutions, support, and a safe space to reconnect with themselves.”
So yes, lymphatic drainage massage can sculpt your jawline or ease stubborn swelling. But its real power is in helping you feel lighter, calmer and more at ease in your own body.
