Meet the Blow-Dry Wizard: Behind the chair with Newcastle hair stylist Frazer Sexton

If you’ve spent any time talking about the North East hairdressing scene, you’ve probably heard whispers about the Blow-Dry Wizard.

And no, it’s not a TikTok trend – it’s Newcastle hair stylist Frazer Sexton, the man behind Frazer Sexton Hair.

With his big personality, technical know-how and a salon atmosphere that feels more like a coffee catch-up with your best mates than a traditional appointment, Frazer has built something truly special.

After opening just last year at The Croft in Killingworth, we sat down with him to talk about his journey so far, the magic behind the chair and why he’s now on the hunt for his very own “mini-me.”

HLN TOP TIP: To celebrate his first anniversary, Frazer is offering three colour transformations worth £170. Enter via our Instagram – link here.

THE VIBE: COFFEE MORNING MEETS HAIR SALON

“It’s like a hub, honestly. Imagine a coffee morning where everyone feels at home. You’ll have someone who’s travelled three buses to get here sitting next to someone who lives down the street—and before long, they’re chatting like old friends. That’s what I’ve always wanted.”

Frazer says.

It’s clear his salon isn’t just about hair—it’s about connection. Conversations flow, friendships form, and clients leave feeling just as good emotionally as they do physically. “No matter how busy I am, I want people to feel like they’ve known me for years. And if something’s not right? I’ll always fix it. No judgment, no stress.”

THE FRAZER SEXTON HAIR DIFFERENCE

Of course, we had to ask about that nickname. “The blow-dry wizard,” he laughs. “It started years ago. At first, I wasn’t sure I liked it, but my clients loved it. I think it stuck because people leave with hair that looks effortless – not stiff or overdone. It feels natural, lived-in, like you just woke up fabulous.”

But Frazer’s expertise goes far beyond blow-dries. He’s equally passionate about colour, cutting, and even scalp science. “I love problem-solving and tailoring techniques to each client. No two heads of hair are ever the same. And one thing clients really appreciate is my honesty – I’m not afraid to say no if what you’re after won’t suit you.”

NEARLY 20 YEARS IN THE MANE GAME

After training in Newcastle, he spent six years styling hair on cruise ships – travelling the world while sharing his craft. He then moved into high-end salons and eventually became an education and development manager, training stylists across the UK.

But at the heart of it all, he just loves people. Which is why his clients keep coming back and following him wherever he goes.

FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS TO BIG MILESTONES

It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since Frazer opened his salon doors. “I started in a much smaller unit,” he says. “Now I’ve doubled the space, created a stronger vibe, and we’ve even been shortlisted for The Small Business Awards UK.”

The recognition hasn’t stopped there. We recently featured him in our round-up of the top salons in the North East. “That meant the world,” he says. “To be recognised like that, anonymously, after just a year? Amazing.”

THE FUTURE OF FRAZER SEXTON HAIR

Frazer isn’t slowing down. With the salon’s first anniversary around the corner, he’s planning giveaways, competitions and even personalised flowers for clients. “It’s my way of saying thank you. Without them, there wouldn’t be a salon.”

Looking further ahead, his dream is to move into bigger premises, expand his team and continue teaching. “I’ve been called determined before, and I think that’s true – I don’t stop until I get where I want to be. And I’m nowhere near done yet.”

And for those wondering yes, the blow-dry wizard still brings his magic to all styles—from men’s cuts and wedding hair to tricky colour corrections. “I love it all,” he says. “Every style, every person – that’s what keeps it exciting.”

COME WORK WITH FRAZER SEXTON HAIR

With the salon busier than ever, Frazer is now ready to expand his team. But he’s not looking for just anyone. “I need someone with personality – a big personality. Someone who loves their clients like friends but can still keep that professional balance.”

Finding the right fit is no easy task. “If I could bottle up what I’ve got and hand it over, that would be perfect. A mini-me, basically.”

“Whether you’re freelance or employed, part-time or full-time, I’ll help you build the structure that works for you. Don’t want to work Saturdays? Fine. Need to balance kids with your career? Absolutely. What matters is ambition, kindness and genuinely caring about clients.”
