Jobsons of Alnwick: A new chapter for a beloved high street store

“We’re here to offer something different. Not just products, but real knowledge, honest advice, and a warm welcome. That’s what will keep the high street alive.”

A proud history with deep local roots

There aren’t many shops left like Jobsons of Alnwick. The store has been part of the community for decades, originally a one-stop shop selling everything from fishing tackle and toys to saddlery and leather goods.

After decades on the high street, Jobsons of Alnwick has been given a new lease of life by owner Rachel Wilson.

It’s been around in one form or another for over 100 years,” says Rachel. “Everyone remembers popping in for something – a football, a dog lead, even a fishing rod. At one point the store was a master saddler, with 11 saddlers making leather equestrian goods.”

Over the past 25 years, Jobsons of Alnwick evolved into a country clothing and lifestyle store, popular with both locals and tourists.

Meet Rachel Wilson: Bringing fresh energy to Alnwick high street

Rachel Wilson officially took over the business in January 2024. With a background in finance and a passion for independent retail, she saw the opportunity to take Jobsons of Alnwick into a new era.

I’d always loved retail – I even had a little kids’ clothing venture on the side,” she says. “But after lockdown, I was working from home and found myself really missing the buzz of being around people. I needed something that felt more fulfilling.”

Rachel saw the listing, hesitated for a few weeks, and then went for it. “It was about doing something that was mine – something I could shape and grow.”

Retail with heart: What to expect at Jobsons of Alnwick now

Since taking over, Rachel has completely refreshed the store – not just in its look, but in its personal approach, connections with the community, and new brands. Jobsons of Alnwick now offers a welcoming, relaxed shopping experience that’s as close to having a personal shopper as you can get, without the pressure.

The team offer honest, considered advice, with a focus on fit, fabric, and how items work together. “We’re not here to sell you something for the sake of it – we want you to love what you buy and come back for more.”

Rachel explains, “We want everyone to feel comfortable here. Whether you know what you’re looking for or not, we’re here to offer a helping hand – especially for women who may have lost confidence in their style or just want a fresh opinion.”

Something for everyone: Quality, style and accessible prices

While the focus is on quality pieces and sustainable brands, Rachel is keen to highlight that Jobsons of Alnwick offers a broad range of price points. “It’s not just high-end, we’ve got something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for an everyday wardrobe staple or something special for a weekend away, the range of brands we stock now have great quality pieces at a range of price points.”

From the best-selling Brax trousers to Dubarry boots that will last forever, unique pieces from Lily & Me, and the return of Joules to the store, there’s something in-store to suit every taste, budget and occasion.

There’s also a selection of accessories and gifts including locally made Bobella Candles which are popular with tourists to take home and remember their stay.

Sustainable style and thoughtful brands

Rachel has brought in a carefully curated mix of new and independent brands, with a focus on sustainability and responsible sourcing.

Barbour is a stalwart, not surprisingly one of the most popular brands, and the curated seasonal selection is a great way for locals and visitors to try on both the country and lifestyle fashion lines.

Independent labels like Lily & Me and Sugarhill Brighton bring unique pieces to the store which are hard to find anywhere else in the North East.

“We try to stock natural fibres like cotton and wool wherever possible, and we only work with brands we trust. Lily & Me even own their own factory in Nepal, so they know exactly who’s making the clothes, and ensure they’re paid a living wage.”

Rachel has also made the decision to part ways with brands that no longer align with her values, including those that have become overly discount-led or have moved into mass production. “It’s about consistency, quality, and being proud of what we stock.”

Alnwick’s new era: Tourism, dining and independent retail

Thanks to Alnwick’s growing status as a destination for luxury staycations, Jobsons of Alnwick is seeing a boost from new openings in the town.

Bailiffgate Hotel has brought a boutique hotel and restaurant, and nearby favourites like Sonnet are helping to draw in a new wave of stylish shoppers.

“We get a lot of ladies who’ve been for lunch, had a glass of wine, and then pop in to browse,” says Rachel. “It’s lovely – they’re relaxed, they’re in a good mood, and they’re open to trying something new.”

Looking ahead: Building a legacy on the high street

Rachel’s vision for Jobsons of Alnwick is clear: “We want to be known for our brilliant service, our beautiful edit of clothing, and the experience people have when they walk through the door.

She’s not rushing to change everything overnight – instead, it’s about building a sustainable, community-focused business that blends the tradition of the store with modern retail values.

“We’re here to offer something different. Not just products, but real knowledge, honest advice, and a warm welcome. That’s what will keep the high street alive.
