- Advertisement Feature
School’s out and summer is in full swing – and if you’ve got little ones bouncing off the walls, fear not. As always, Alnwick Castle has you got you covered.
This month is packed full of free family fun. Whether your kids dream of flying on a broomstick or jousting like a medieval knight, there’s something to thrill everyone. The best part? Your ticket is a season pass for endless return visits this summer.
Here’s how to make the most of your visit this August…
DAILY ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT SUMMER
Explore the Artisans Courtyard
Step back in time in the Artisans Courtyard, where history comes alive in the most hands-on way possible. Think dressing up in medieval garb, designing medieval tiles and chatting with real-life artisans about life in the Middle Ages.
Kids can play traditional games, sit on the throne in Hotspur Hall and learn all about medieval medicine, armour and writing.
Dare to conquer Dragon Quest
Connected to the Artisans Courtyard, Dragon Quest is a must for brave young adventurers. Get lost in a mirror maze, dodge whirlpools, cross fiery bridges, and hunt for dragons in this fantastical, immersive experience. It’s like stepping into a storybook.
Take off with Broomstick Training
Grab your cloak and broomstick—and get ready to fly. Set on the very spot where Harry Potter had his first flying lesson in The Philosopher’s Stone, this magical session is an absolute highlight for wizarding fans.
Your young witches and wizards will learn to hover, corner, and “zoom” under the guidance of expert trainers. It’s weather-dependent and popular, so be sure to book your free slot on the day when you arrive.
Try Have-a-Go Archery (£5 for eight arrows, card only)
This isn’t free, but still a steal. Have-a-Go Archery lets anyone age 11+ channel their inner Robin Hood. Test your aim on the Archery Lawn and see who in your family is the true longbow legend.

Master Archer Andy Rice
Tuesday 5th – Friday 8th August

Tudor Falconry Displays
Monday 11th – Saturday 16th August
History and nature collide fabulously during these live falconry shows by Raphael Historic Falconry. Settle in at the Barneyside area (11am, 1pm and 3pm daily) to watch trained birds swoop through the sky and learn how falconry was the go-to hobby for Tudor nobles – including one of Henry VIII’s wives.
Silly History Boys
Sunday 17th – Friday 22nd August
Forget boring history – these guys make learning fun. Expect interactive shows about the weirdest, grossest, and most hilarious bits of medieval history, from have-a-go jousting to catchy songs. Shows run all day in the Inner Bailey.
Victorian Falconry
Tuesday 26th – Friday 29th August
Missed the falcons earlier in the month? They’re back—but this time with a Victorian twist! Learn how falconry was used to entertain nobles and feed households in the 1800s. Look out for simulated hunts, storytelling, and a sky full of birds at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm in the Barneyside area.
So gather the little ones, put on your wizard robes and head off for a day of enchantment. Alnwick Castle isn’t just a castle – it’s a time-travelling adventure.
