Explore the Artisans Courtyard

Step back in time in the Artisans Courtyard, where history comes alive in the most hands-on way possible. Think dressing up in medieval garb, designing medieval tiles and chatting with real-life artisans about life in the Middle Ages.

Kids can play traditional games, sit on the throne in Hotspur Hall and learn all about medieval medicine, armour and writing.

Dare to conquer Dragon Quest

Connected to the Artisans Courtyard, Dragon Quest is a must for brave young adventurers. Get lost in a mirror maze, dodge whirlpools, cross fiery bridges, and hunt for dragons in this fantastical, immersive experience. It’s like stepping into a storybook.

Take off with Broomstick Training

Grab your cloak and broomstick—and get ready to fly. Set on the very spot where Harry Potter had his first flying lesson in The Philosopher’s Stone, this magical session is an absolute highlight for wizarding fans.

Your young witches and wizards will learn to hover, corner, and “zoom” under the guidance of expert trainers. It’s weather-dependent and popular, so be sure to book your free slot on the day when you arrive.

Try Have-a-Go Archery (£5 for eight arrows, card only)

This isn’t free, but still a steal. Have-a-Go Archery lets anyone age 11+ channel their inner Robin Hood. Test your aim on the Archery Lawn and see who in your family is the true longbow legend.

SPECIAL SUMMER EVENTS NOT TO MISS THIS MONTH 

Tom Fool the Jester

Saturday 2nd  – Wednesday 6th August

Laughter is guaranteed when Alnwick’s mischievous jester, Tom Fool, takes the stage. Expect medieval pranks, cheeky jokes, juggling, and lots of silly fun. Performances happen in the Inner Bailey at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Master Archer Andy Rice

Tuesday 5th – Friday 8th August

Get ready for jaw-dropping demonstrations by Andy Rice, Alnwick Castle’s Master Archer. He’ll show off the incredible skill it takes to shoot a longbow—and throw in a few gruesome battlefield stories for good measure. Shows happen throughout the day on the Archery Lawn.

Tudor Falconry Displays

Monday 11th – Saturday 16th August

History and nature collide fabulously during these live falconry shows by Raphael Historic Falconry. Settle in at the Barneyside area (11am, 1pm and 3pm daily) to watch trained birds swoop through the sky and learn how falconry was the go-to hobby for Tudor nobles – including one of Henry VIII’s wives.

Silly History Boys 

Sunday 17th – Friday 22nd August

Forget boring history – these guys make learning fun. Expect interactive shows about the weirdest, grossest, and most hilarious bits of medieval history, from have-a-go jousting to catchy songs. Shows run all day in the Inner Bailey.

Victorian Falconry 

Tuesday 26th  – Friday 29th August

Missed the falcons earlier in the month? They’re back—but this time with a Victorian twist! Learn how falconry was used to entertain nobles and feed households in the 1800s. Look out for simulated hunts, storytelling, and a sky full of birds at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm in the Barneyside area.
