MIMA – Contemporary art gallery in Middlesbrough

MIMA, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, is a contemporary art gallery set in Centre Square, hosting a rolling programme of exhibitions, learning events and its own permanent Middlesbrough Collection. It’s set to host the 2026 Turner Prize, alongside ongoing shows like New Contemporaries and an open access collection store where visitors can explore works up close.

The draw: free access to a genuinely significant contemporary art programme, plus MIMA Kitchen on site for food and coffee, and a shop selling artists’ editions and publications.

Hours:

Closed Monday

Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm

Sunday 12pm to 4pm.

Vibe check: a genuinely serious cultural destination rather than a small local gallery, well worth combining with lunch at the on site kitchen and a proper couple of hours to explore.
