Barter Books, Alnwick

Barter Books – Secondhand bookshop, café & ice cream parlour in Alnwick, Northumberland

Housed in Alnwick’s grand Victorian railway station, Barter Books is one of Britain’s biggest secondhand bookshops — and the birthplace of the original “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster. Beyond the shelves, expect a model railway winding through the book columns, three 40-foot murals, restored station features, a children’s room, and a whole room of antiquarian books behind glass. Open fires keep things cosy in winter.

The draw: the Station Buffet for good plain food, coffee and cake, plus Paradise, an on-site ice cream parlour — genuinely a full day out rather than a quick browse.

Hours:

Open daily 9am–7pm, including Sundays and bank holidays (closed Christmas Day) ·

Buffet 9am–6pm

Paradise Ice Cream Parlour 12–4pm

Vibe check: a beloved North East institution — part bookshop, part living museum, unhurried and made for lingering.
