The Art of Making – Cumbria

Roman Army Museum hosts The Art of Making, a conversation between the Vindolanda Trust’s Curator Barbara Birley, 2026 Artist-in-Residence Susie MacMurray and experimental archaeologist Sally Pointer.

Examining key artefacts from the Vindolanda collection, the discussion celebrates the art of making, past, present and future, exploring the ancient methods and material knowledge that informed Susie MacMurray’s new artwork for Vindolanda, Again & Again & Again. Chaired by Dr Venda Louise Pollock, Director of Collections and Research at National Galleries Scotland, the panel covers skills including weaving and spinning, uncovering how craft, technique and materials found in the Vindolanda collection inform our understanding of contemporary making practices.

Tickets include light refreshments plus same-day site entry to both the Roman Army Museum and Magna Fort and Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum, where you can also view the Again & Again & Again installation.
