Pre-Raphaelites: Art and Poetry – Newcastle

The Laing Art Gallery hosts Pre-Raphaelites: Art and Poetry, the first large-scale exhibition to explore the connections between Pre-Raphaelite art and literature.

Featuring over 100 paintings, drawings and objects, many never seen in Newcastle before, the exhibition brings together work by John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris, alongside women artists including Elizabeth Siddall, Kate Bunce and Julia Margaret Cameron. It traces how the group drew inspiration from poets such as Dante Aligheri, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Keats and Alfred Tennyson, with key loans travelling from Tate, the V&A and the Ashmolean Museum among others.

Two of the Laing’s own paintings, Hunt’s Isabella and the Pot of Basil and Burne-Jones’ Laus Veneris, are also on display in the context of this literary movement, shown alongside related preparatory works.
