Greggs Ta-Pastry – Newcastle
The Greggs Ta-Pastry has come home to Newcastle.
This eight-metre embroidered artwork, a stitch-perfect tribute to the humble Greggs Sausage Roll, goes on free display at the Great North Museum: Hancock, having first launched at London’s Design Museum for National Sausage Roll Day. Created by Royal embroiderers Hawthorne & Heaney, it took more than 200 hours of needlework and over 5.5 million stitches to make.
Styled after the famous Bayeux Tapestry, it swaps medieval battle scenes for six illustrated chapters charting the sausage roll’s story, from founder John Gregg pedalling across Tyneside to a bake now enjoyed more than a million times a day. You’ll find it alongside the museum’s T-Rex skeleton, Egyptian mummy and Hadrian’s Wall relics, plus a companion exhibition of a 174-year-old, hand-drawn Bayeux Tapestry made by Newcastle schoolboys.
