Chitra Ganesh: Journey to the Great Below – Gateshead
Baltic presents Chitra Ganesh’s first major UK solo exhibition at a public institution, featuring a new animation, newly commissioned sculptures and a site-specific wall drawing.
Rooted in drawing and painting, Ganesh’s multidisciplinary practice draws on surrealism, science fiction, anime and South Asian visual culture, reorienting traditional storytelling around queer and femme protagonists. The centrepiece is a new large-scale animation inspired by The Descent of Inanna into the Underworld, widely considered the world’s oldest recorded myth, alongside sculptures drawing on artefacts held by the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and recent paintings including Tree of Life and Breathing Water and Air.
