Birdwatch on the Staiths – Gateshead

Tyne Derwent Way hosts a peaceful morning of birdwatching from the top of Dunston Staiths, a historic structure tied to the region’s coal industry heritage, overlooking the Tyne Estuary at low tide.

From this raised platform, you’ll take in spectacular views across the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside alongside the mudflats that provide such an important food source for local birds. Led by knowledgeable guides from Wild Intrigue, you’ll search for seasonal species such as Grey Heron, Shelduck, Cormorant, Redshank and Gulls, with previous sightings including Kestrel, Kingfisher and Grey Seal.

You’ll also learn about the local history and ecology behind the birds you spot. Best suited to ages 12 and up, with binoculars available to borrow, flat footwear a must, and the event cancelled in very wet or windy weather.
