Sunday lunch in the Tees Valley? 9 of our favourite spots you’ll love
We don’t know about you, but we think autumn is the perfect time of year to treat yourself to a Sunday roast or two. Think cosy pubs with crackling fires, the perfect Yorkshire puddings slathered in gravy, and a lazy afternoon with nowhere to be.
Luckily, the Tees Valley is home to plenty of places serving up a proper Sunday feast, from local pubs to restaurants and even a couple of names featured in the Michelin Guide. Whether you’re after a traditional roast with all the trimmings, something a little more refined, or simply somewhere to settle in and let someone else do the washing up, we’ve rounded up nine spots worth knowing about.
MUSE – YARM
104B High Street, Yarm TS15 9AU
Muse in Yarm is a great choice if you want somewhere sophisticated for your roast. This continental restaurant brings a little European flair to the traditional Sunday lunch, with perfectly presented plates and inspired starters that make it an incredible meal from the get-go. Try the Lindisfarne oysters followed by the beef sirloin to make it a proper occasion.
THE CRATHORNE ARMS – YARM
2 East Villa, Crathorne, Yarm TS15 0BA

The Crathorne Arms near Yarm is a classic country pub where the food feels like a hug on a plate. Cosy, welcoming and gorgeously traditional, it’s the kind of place made for long, lazy lunches with lashings of gravy. And with generous portions to match, we never leave feeling hungry.
THE SPA HOTEL – SALTBURN
Saltburn Bank, Saltburn TS12 1HH
What could be better than blowing the cobwebs off with a walk along Saltburn beach, followed by a Sunday roast at The Spa Hotel with views over the sea? That sounds like our idea of a perfect day out. Not only can you enjoy your classic plated roast here, but they do a roast sharing platter that we’ve got our eye on.
THE BAY HORSE – DARLINGTON
45 The Green, Hurworth, Darlington DL2 2AA
For a Sunday roast that feels like a proper treat, The Bay Horse in Hurworth delivers plenty of wow factor. Featured in the Michelin Guide since 2008, this is a 15th-century coaching inn with a crackling fire turned gastropub where quality takes centre stage, with beautifully crafted dishes, carefully considered ingredients and plenty of attention to detail. Expect all the comfort of a roast, but with an elevated touch.
THE BRICKYARD – BROTTON
15 High Street, Brotton TS12 2PE
The Brickyard in Brotton is hard to beat if you want a warm and homely feel to your roast. This family-run spot has become a firm favourite with locals and we totally understand why. They serve up hearty portions, comforting flavours and a welcoming atmosphere that absolutely helps you to find room for pudding too.
THE PEPPERMILL BISTRO – BILLINGHAM
42 Station Road, Billingham TS23 1AB
Sunday roasts at The Peppermill Bistro in Billingham are a bit like gold dust. They don’t offer them every week, but when roast dates appear on social media, tables disappear quickly and for good reason. The food here is always phenomenal, so if you’re lucky enough to bag a table for one of their special roast Sundays, you’re in for a real treat.
CHADWICKS INN – MALTBY
High Lane, Maltby TS8 0BG
Chadwicks Inn in Maltby ticks all the boxes for a roast in the countryside. This Michelin Guide spot isn’t too far from the North Yorkshire Moors, so we love refuelling there after a walk. It’s the sort of place where beautiful food meets a cosy, welcoming gastropub setting, making it a top contender for an autumnal Sunday lunch.
CENTRAL PARK – MIDDLESBROUGH
337 Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough TS5 6AA
If you want somewhere for the whole family, Central Park is the place to book. This restaurant is a total institution in Middlesbrough, famed for their parmos, but their Sunday roasts are also out of this world. Anywhere that serves pigs in blankets as part of their roasts all year round is an automatic must-visit for us.
BELLO BISTRO – MOORSHOLM
22 High Street, Moorsholm TS12 3JH
Bello Bistro in Moorsholm brings a little extra polish to the Sunday roast, having earned one AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence. It’s a firm local favourite, not just for its Sunday lunches served 12pm – 2.30pm, but for the beautiful food served throughout the week too. Team up a roast here with a walk around Lockwood Beck Reservoir and you’re on to a winner.
