Cinema season is upon us – here’s what to see this September
This month’s new releases promise some thrilling cinema outings.
Among them: Georgia Oakley’s fresh take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, a new spin on Resident Evil from horror’s hottest director Zach Cregger, and a new Aardman animation, Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.
Fall 2: Deadpoint
Wednesday 2nd September
A nightmare for anyone with a fear of heights: the sequel to 2022’s survival thriller Fall follows two friends in peril on a mountain in Thailand. Overwhelmed by her sister’s death, Jax Hunter (Harriet Slater) turns to her fearless friend Luce (Arsema Thomas) to attempt the infamous plank wall of Mount Kwan. A sudden rockslide traps them 3,000 feet up, forcing a fight for survival against extreme heights and unforgiving terrain.
Leviticus
Wednesday 2nd September
A chilling addition to queer horror from debut director Adrian Chiarella, Leviticus follows two lovestruck teenage boys, Naim (Joe Bird) and Ryan (Stacy Clausen), who must escape a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire most: each other. The film blends nerve-shredding suspense with an emotionally powerful love story, and comes from the producers behind acclaimed Australian genre horror including Talk to Me and The Babadook.
The Death of Robin Hood
Friday 4th September
A darker reimagining of the classic tale from director Michael Sarnoski (Pig), starring Hugh Jackman as a tormented, battle-worn Robin Hood grappling with his violent past. Injured after battle, he’s offered a chance at salvation by a mysterious woman. The cast also includes Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu), Noah Jupe (Hamnet) and Jodie Comer (28 Years Later).
The Incomer
Friday 4th September
A quirky, offbeat debut from director Louis Paxton, following siblings Isla (Gayle Rankin) and Sandy (Grant O’Rourke), who live on a remote Scottish island hunting seabirds and talking to mythical beings while fending off dreaded “Incomers.” Their world is upended by the arrival of awkward council worker Daniel (Domhnall Gleeson), sent to uproot them from their home. Giving major The Ballad of Wallis Island vibes.
Pressure
Wednesday 9th September
In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) and Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott) face an impossible choice: launch the largest seaborne invasion in history, or risk losing the war altogether. This WWII drama, from the producers of Darkest Hour, tells the gripping true story of a meteorological officer’s role in the Normandy landings. Weather maps have never been this exciting.
Don’t Look Back in Anger
Wednesday 9th September
Charting Liam and Noel Gallagher’s triumphant reunion, this documentary features never-before-seen footage from the Oasis Live ’25 tour, capturing the experience and emotion of the band and their fans around the world.
Practical Magic 2
Friday 11th September
Back in 1996, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman starred as sibling witches battling the vengeful spirit of an abusive ex-boyfriend, cursed to be loveless until they confront dark secrets. The sequel returns to a world of moonlit mischief and ancestral magic, as the Owens sisters face the dark curse threatening to unravel their family once and for all.
Bad Apples
Friday 18th September
Saoirse Ronan is on top form in this dark comedy thriller. Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best with a class of ten-year-olds, is pushed to breaking point by one chaotic student. With her career on the line, she makes a series of bad decisions that lead to her accidentally locking the “bad apple” in her home. She tries to backtrack, but when the rest of the class starts flourishing, she finds herself in a very complicated position.
Resident Evil
Friday 18th September
Zach Cregger, hot property in horror after Weapons and Barbarian, brings a thrilling reinvention of the Resident Evil video game franchise. The story follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who finds himself in a non-stop fight for survival as one horrifying night collapses into chaos.
Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom
Friday 18th September
Aardman’s fluffiest star returns for a third big-screen outing that’s baa-rilliant. Everyone’s looking forward to Halloween on Mossy Bottom Farm until the clumsy Farmer trashes the flock’s beloved pumpkin patch. When Shaun turns mad scientist to fix the problem, things spiral out of control, and with the Farmer missing and a wild beast roaming the woods of Mossingham, a monstrously fun family adventure awaits.
Heart of the Beast
Friday 25th September
Two of my favourite things: Brad Pitt and a dog. Director David Ayer reunites with his Fury star in this survival thriller, following special forces officer James Belmont (Brad Pitt) and his combat dog Odin, both traumatised by their time in action. Things get harder still when their plane crashes, stranding them in the Alaskan wilderness.
Sense and Sensibility
Friday 25th September
It’s a good autumn for Jane Austen fans, with a new Pride and Prejudice also landing on Netflix later this year. Director Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean) brings an irresistible new take on Austen’s classic: a charming, witty and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood. Sisters Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Marianne Dashwood (Esmé Creed-Miles) navigate love, loss and financial uncertainty amid the era’s societal expectations.
Hope
Friday 25th September
An epic sci-fi thriller from visionary director Na Hong-jin (The Wailing), following the carnage of a mysterious monster ravaging the remote South Korean village of Hope. Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and rookie deputy Sung-ae (Hoyeon) defend their community after wildfires cut off communications, while a group of hunters tracking the beast in the nearby forest find themselves the hunted. But all is not as it seems.
