How Tiny Lives is making sure every mum feels celebrated this Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the incredible women who shape our lives.
For many families, it’s filled with breakfast in bed, handmade cards and bunches of flowers. But for some mums across the North East, this special day will be spent beside their baby on a neonatal ward.
While it might look a little different from what they imagined, these early days of motherhood are filled with extraordinary strength, love and resilience. That’s why this Mother’s Day, Newcastle-based charity Tiny Lives wants to make sure every mum on the neonatal unit feels recognised, supported and celebrated.
Because no matter where Mother’s Day is spent, every mum deserves to feel special.
SMALL GESTURES THAT MEAN THE WORLD
For Tiny Lives, every day is Mother’s Day. The charity supports families whose babies are cared for on the neonatal unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Through their Mother’s Day campaign, they create small but meaningful moments of kindness for mums spending time on the ward – reminding them that they’re not alone and that their journey into motherhood is something so special.
Even the smallest gesture can have a huge impact. It’s a way of saying: we see you, we’re thinking of you and we’re celebrating you.
BRIGHTENING MOTHER’S DAY WITH FLOWERS
One of the lovely ways Tiny Lives marks the day is by bringing a little brightness onto the ward.
For the past few years, the charity has been supported by Katherine’s Florists, who generously donate fabulous flowers to help celebrate the mums on the neonatal unit.
These beautiful bouquets help make mums feel extra special and bring a welcome moment of joy to the ward. Their continued support means so much and is a wonderful example of the community coming together to support families during this important time.
SUPPORTING FAMILIES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Neonatal care touches more families than many people realise, with 1 in 7 babies needing neonatal care each year.
That’s why the support Tiny Lives provides is so vital. Alongside creating special moments for mums on the ward, donations help fund a range of services designed to support families through their neonatal journey.
One of these services is vCreate, a secure video messaging platform that helps families stay connected with their babies when they can’t always be together.
Nurses send short video updates to parents, capturing precious little milestones and moments that mean the world to mums and dads.
For families who can’t always be by their baby’s side, these messages help bring reassurance and comfort during those early days.
HELPING MAMS AND BABIES BOND
Bonding in the early days of life is incredibly important, and Tiny Lives helps make that possible in creative ways.
Miniboo Bonding Aids allow babies and their mums to stay connected through scent, even when cuddles sadly have to wait. Babies keep one soft toy in their incubator, while mum keeps the matching one close to her skin, swapping them during visits so they can comfort each other through familiarity.
It’s a simple but powerful way to strengthen the bond between mum and baby during those precious first weeks.
SUPPORTING FAMILIES’ WELLBEING
The journey through neonatal care can be emotional, which is why Tiny Lives also funds mental health support for families, including a Clinical Psychologist on Ward 35.
Having specialist support available helps parents feel supported, understood and cared for throughout their neonatal journey.
REMOVING PRACTICAL WORRIES
Tiny Lives also helps ease some of the practical pressures families can face.
By providing parking permits or public transport passes for every family on Ward 35, the charity ensures parents can spend time with their baby without worrying about travel costs, allowing them to focus on what matters most.
