The footwear trends defining 2026 – according to an expert
If you’re building your 2026 wardrobe, footwear is doing some serious heavy lifting this season.
Think rich textures, chocolate tones and silhouettes that feel both elevated and wearable, even on the most chaotic weekday mornings.
We asked Rachel Clinkard, Ecommerce Director at Charles Clinkard, to walk us through the trends she’s seeing everywhere this year…
Back to brown
“There’s no denying the allure of chocolate this season. Whether you’re on the hunt for chunky knee-highs or dainty Mary Janes, if it’s a shade of brown, you can’t go wrong.
“From tan to deep cognac, these warm, versatile shades create the perfect foundation for autumn dressing. Whether paired with an oversized scarf, a maxi coat or a soft knit, earthy tones add instant polish.
“Tap into the luxury allure of rich mochas, cognac caramels and espresso. Think burnt brown, Bordeaux or burgundy colours that can be paired beautifully with neutral outerwear or tonal accessories for a chic, layered look.”
Suede supremacy
“Suede continues to reign for A/W 2025, from supple loafers to mid-calf boots, its soft, tactile appeal adds depth to each outfit. In warmer tones like tan or Bordeaux, suede feels both cosy and refined, perfectly complimenting the season’s mood of understated luxury.”
Style tip: Protect your suede with a good waterproof spray to keep your autumn favourites flawless.
Retro revival
“Retro influences continue to make waves, especially for trainers. From nostalgic colour blocking to vintage-inspired shapes, this throwback trend feels effortlessly cool and is the perfect weekend companion to relaxed denim, casual tailoring and a statement accessory or two.”
Leopard luxe
“It’s safe to say that the animal print trend is showing no sign of slowing down.
Whilst last season was all about the leopard-print denim, this year has been reimagined in footwear as the pattern continues to dominate. This season it can be found on everything from sleek trims and subtle panels to an all-over statement look. Leopard print is the perfect way to inject a playful edge into classic styling.”
Signature silhouettes
“Boot season is officially in full swing and this year it’s all about sleek, sophisticated styles. Silhouettes are looking refreshingly wearable with mid-calf and long boots trending, particularly with lower, practical heels. Chelsea boots continue to outperform biker styles, offering sleek versatility from weekday to weekend.
“For a touch of flair, this season has also seen the influx of the ruched-leg boot. Slouch-fit yet stylish, they can be paired with a mini skirt and an oversized coat to make a statement.”
Comfort meets craft
“This A/W it’s all about the balance between feel-good comfort and modern design. Gabor has some standout styles this season which perfectly balance style with comfort – think cushioned and removeable soles, wider calf fittings and flexible constructions.
“Small trims, subtle metallics and tonal colour pops continue to add a little something extra to ensure that style never comes at the expense of wearability.”
