Metrocentre has been a stalwart of North East shopping since 1986 and, nearly 40 years on, it proudly remains one of Europe’s largest indoor mall-style shopping centres.
But one thing Metrocentre has never done is rest on its laurels, and 2025 has seen one of its biggest glow-ups yet. Today, it boasts more than 270 shops, over 60 dining destinations and leisure options that keep getting better and better.
Expect new brands you won’t find anywhere else in the region, beautifully designed stores, stylish dining spots and activities to keep all the family entertained.
Throw in late-night shopping, plentiful free parking and festive decorations at every turn, and the Christmas magic truly comes alive.
Here’s why Metrocentre is one of the most exciting places to shop, browse, dine and have fun this year.
New stores and brands that you won’t find anywhere else in the North East
Metrocentre is now home to some of the most exciting fashion and beauty arrivals in the region. Stradivarius has brought its Spanish street-style edit to Gateshead, while Sosandar offers wearable, influencer-approved fashion for a range of body types. Zara remains one of the centre’s biggest attractions, with a huge new store selling womenswear, menswear and kids clothing.
You’ll also find Urban Outfitters, Flannels, Mango, Reiss, Hobbs, Phase Eight, All Saints – the list goes on, (and on). Homeware and craft lovers, don’t miss out on Søstrene Grene, which is a must-visit for Scandi-inspired home bits and wrapping.
If you’re buying gifts, stocking up for party season or simply in the mood to treat yourself, it’s all under one roof.
A serious beauty destination
Christmas and beauty shopping are a match made in heaven, and Metrocentre now has three of the most exciting beauty halls in the country.
H Beauty is a game-changer for the region, bringing luxury skincare, fragrance, a blow-dry bar and gifting in a space that feels straight out of London. We love the huge Charlotte Tilbury counter and the beautiful Dior space which makes luxury shopping a dream. Plus, it has the bonus of its own Harrods Champagne and Cocktail Bar for a mid-shop break.
FLANNELS is a beauty-lovers’ playground, bringing luxury skincare and make-up brands to the region, including the only Dolce&Gabbana Beauty counter to be found in the North East. Whilst you’re there, check out the region’s only FLANNELS Home section, and stock up at the new SKIMS concession.
Finally, Sephora brings a hit of global beauty culture to Metrocentre, packed with exclusive brands that we can now explore and swatch rather than guessing our shade online. It’s packed with Christmas gift sets for everyone on your list, or you could make the ultimate wishlist for Santa…
Food and drink that makes it a full day out
The food offering at Metrocentre has stepped up in a big way. Opening on 29th November, Maki & Ramen, is one of the slickest new offerings, with its Japanese-inspired décor, hand-rolled sushi and steaming bowls of ramen. Perfect between shopping sessions, perfect for dinner afterwards.
Another new opening not to miss, is the super indulgent churro, soft-serve and cotton candy store, The Knot Churros. We’re talking vegan baked (not fried) churros which are the star of the show, alongside viral pink and blue hot chocolates and milkshakes sparkling with edible glitter.
Festive shopping without the stress
Late-night opening hours throughout December make a huge difference if you want to avoid crowds or shop after work. The centre’s free parking remains one of its biggest advantages compared to city-centre shopping, no circling for spaces, no stress, no time limit.
Add in the fact you’re warm, dry and surrounded by hundreds of shops and places to eat… what more could you need?
For festive shopping that feels indulgent, stress-free and enjoyable, Metrocentre is the place to be.
With brand-new stores, exciting exclusives, next-level beauty and great dining, all wrapped up with free parking and late-night openings, it’s the North East’s ultimate Christmas shopping destination.
