Raising the bar: How the Florence Tuition Studio is helping children in the North East thrive in maths and science
We sat down with Natalie, founder of The Florence Tuition Studio, to find out how she’s helping young minds thrive in maths and science – and why a love of learning starts with the right environment…
Located in the heart of Gosforth, The Florence Tuition Studio is redefining what academic support looks like – one inspiring lesson at a time. Gone are the days of drab tutoring sessions around a kitchen table. At The Florence, learning is something to look forward to. With a purpose-designed studio, tiered seating (more Google HQ than a lecture hall) and a buzz of energy the moment you walk through the door, it’s easy to see why this isn’t your average tuition centre. In fact, founder Natalie has spent the past 20 years working hard to make sure of it.
Having built a successful career in investment banking at a major American firm, Natalie might not have seemed the traditional candidate to launch a tuition studio. But it was during her time there that the seed was planted. As part of a corporate social responsibility initiative, she opted into a voluntary programme tutoring inner-city children in maths and finance – and something just clicked. What began as a way to give back quickly revealed a natural talent for making even the trickiest subjects engaging, accessible and surprisingly fun. It wasn’t long before she traded spreadsheets for whiteboards, embarking on a new path that combined academic rigour with real impact.
“I found that I had the right personality to be a tutor, a combination of knowing the subjects and also conveying those principles in a relatable and enjoyable format. The key is engaging children in subjects they may feel averse to and knowing the tricks that help them obtain the marks,”
explains Natalie.
Since launching The Florence Tuition Studio, she’s built a space rooted in that philosophy – combining proven academic methods with warmth, encouragement and a genuine understanding of how children learn best.
Face-to-face learning in a digital world
While online learning might have boomed during the pandemic, Natalie remains a firm believer in the power of face-to-face tuition. She had already been delivering online sessions long before lockdowns came into play, mainly for travelling diplomatic families. But she’s seen first-hand the toll COVID took on students’ confidence and knowledge. The model has adapted to that of a hybrid model of face to face with online tuition, using the advantages of both to ensure the children attain the best understanding and ultimately results.
“The market is flooded with online tuition,” she says. “But there’s such a range in quality and it is still an unregulated market which isn’t right. That’s why we invested in a dedicated tuition studio – a place where learning is active, carefully planned and completely focused on the student whilst being safe. Parents know exactly who is tutoring their child”.
Each small-group session at The Florence is bespoke to the needs of the children in the room. With 20 years of tutoring experience under her belt, Natalie brings tried-and-tested strategies that help every child reach their personal best. From Year 6 up to Year 11, the focus is always on progress and helping students build the kind of confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.
Creative clubs and revision courses
While academic excellence is at the core of everything The Florence offers, the studio’s programme goes beyond textbook learning. There’s a full calendar of engaging sessions – from Science Club and Algebra Afternoons to Creative Club and Games Night – all designed to bring learning to life in new and exciting ways.
And when exam season rolls around, The Florence becomes a hub of support for Year 10 and Year 11 students. The GCSE Easter revision courses are intensive, supportive and expertly designed to help teens feel calm, confident and ready to tackle their exams head-on.
A different kind of tutoring experience
So what sets The Florence apart from other tuition centres? For Natalie, it comes down to knowing the students as individuals – how they think, how they learn and what makes them tick. Small group sessions are carefully curated so that children not only learn together but form friendships, collaborate and feel safe to ask questions they might never voice at school.
Parents have noticed the difference, too. From students voluntarily doing homework (yes, really!) to growing enthusiasm for subjects they once dreaded, the impact is clear. And with many students entering UK-wide competitions and extending their learning in exciting new directions, the results go far beyond exam scores.
Looking ahead
As The Florence continues to grow, the vision remains the same – to support every student in reaching their full potential, both academically and personally. With new clubs launching and plans for further enrichment opportunities in 2025, it’s an exciting time for the studio.
Whether you’re the parent of a Year 6 student who needs a confidence boost, or a Year 11 teen gearing up for GCSEs, The Florence offers more than just tuition. It’s a place to grow, learn and maybe even start loving the subjects you once feared.
The Florence is now taking bookings for places starting in September 2025, so if you’re curious, why not book an appointment to meet Natalie and take a look around?
